Foreign investment saturating the market, growing international competition and the need for a base to launch into the global market are the key drivers for Australian companies establishing themselves in the United Kingdom, according to a new Monash University report.

The report, Experiences of Australian Firms in the United Kingdom, was commissioned by UK Trade & Investment to understand Australian business’ perceptions of opportunities and constraints for foreign direct investment in the UK.

“The UK realises the value Australian companies add to the economy and is keen to continue attracting them. Understanding the main drivers and obstacles to set up in the UK means the process can be improved to make the UK’s offer even more attractive,” said Andrew Cahn, UK Trade & Investment Chief Executive.

Report author Dr Susan Freeman, Monash University Faculty of Business and Economics, said the study found the UK is the preferred location for initial investment by Australian service and manufacturing firms engaged in high-tech, knowledge intensive products and processes, as it is regarded as the centre of global commerce and gateway into Western Europe.
