Small business in on privacy act

Privacy laws for small businesses should change, according to the hefty 2,700-page report by the Australia Law Reform Commission (ALRC). The report outlines 300 recommendations to change Australian law, which the ALRC has labelled overly complex and not flexible enough to cope with emerging demands.

One of the recommendations will involve an expanded scope for managing information. Currently, private businesses with an annual turnover below $3 million are exempt from the law that governs the collection, storage and use of staff and customer information, accounting for almost 2 million businesses.

Other changes recommended include ensuring employers keep staff records updated, accurate and accessible by the individual employees, but secure from others.
