The Employment Index compiled by online job advertising company Seek reveals that despite a rise of 0.7 percent in the ratio of job listings to job applications in February, the overall fall of 4.9 percent in the last quarter indicates some relief for employers.

"The data for the last three months suggests the economy may be approaching a turning point," said Joe Powell, sales director at Seek. "It will be reassuring to employers that the gap between demand and supply may finally be starting to close."

The most difficult jobs to fill last month were for radiologists, landscape architects and navy personnel. Positions that attracted the most competition were for call centre operators, manufacturing packers, kitchen hands and retail sales assistants.

Seek holds about two-thirds of the online market for job ads, equivalent of half all internet and newspaper job advertisements in Australia.
