Lobbying from employment providers has saved the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme (NEIS) from the government axe. Prior to the May Budget, an employment services review recommended axing NEIS, which the Federal Government then slated to end in July 2009.

NEIS assists people on income support start new businesses with training, planning, mentoring and the equivalent of the New Start allowance. Instead of being axed, the scheme will now come under the new Employment Pathways Program.

“The government has always stressed that self-employment is a critical element of the new system and all services including those previously provided by NEIS will continue to be offered to job seekers,” says Brendan O'Connor, Minister for Employment Participation.

More than 80 percent of NEIS participants still run a business or are employed full time, double the success rate of the work-for-the-dole scheme.
