Due to the skills shortage, mobile workers—including seasonal workers, contractors and other temporary workers such as locums—have become increasingly important to rural communities.

The University Department of Rural Health at the University of Tasmania, alongside Bowen Collinsville Enterprise (QLD) and the Southern Cross University School of Commerce and Management (NSW), has initiated a study to uncover the extended benefits of mobile workers beyond their skills.

Department director, associate professor Sue Kilpatrick, says the study will demonstrate “what these skilled people are bringing to the community, help us find who they are, and help us recruit the mobile workers”.

The study will initially focus on Ross and Campbell Town in Tasmania, Bowen in Queensland and Kyogle in New South Wales.
