A forecast by recruitment agency Michael Page reveals that despite the threat of economic downturn, 41 percent of employers in the technology industry have boosted salaries, while 32 percent have offered flexible working conditions to retain staff because of the skills shortage. Others have looked offshore to recruit new talent.
Intelligent Business Research Services analyst Rob Mackinnon says while offshore recruiting may be necessary, it is not always the easiest route. “When times are tough, it is possible to recruit overseas, but there is lot of effort involved in doing that unless you have some good contacts,” he says. “You really have to offer something attractive to get staff to come, then there is always the risk that they may not settle down in a new country.”
Other recruitment techniques include looking outside the IT industry for talent, such as recruiting from business for business analyst roles, but this proves difficult for more technical roles such as programmers.
