Equal Pay Day for women in the workforce

Who says there’s pay equity? With women in the workforce earning 84 cents for each male dollar, and consequently working 14 months to match the average male’s annual salary, pay equity is obviously a myth.

The Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workforce is setting out to dispel this myth by naming August 27 Equal Pay Day. August 27 is the day female salaries equal what males earn by June 30.

“There will be no ribbons, wrist bands or special clothing to promote Equal Pay Day on August 27,” says Anna McPhee, director of Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency. “Women already have less hourly pay, less weekly pay, less annual pay and less total superannuation savings, we wouldn’t want them to give up any more of their hard earned pay to support this day.” Instead, the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency is urging business owners to initiate a pay audit in their workplace.
