Hosting World Youth Day 2008 (WYD08) will inject an additional $231 million into Sydney’s economy.
“WYD08 will be a major shot in the arm for Sydney businesses,” says Patricia Forsythe, executive director of the Sydney Chamber of Commerce. And who will benefit? Retailers, wholesalers and tourism operators are in the forefront, but in reality most businesses will benefit from Sydney’s global brand positioning.
“WYD08 will be the largest international event Australia has hosted. It will attract over 125,000 international visitors—more than during the 2000 Olympics,” says Forsythe. “The fact that WYD08 is being held in July is an added benefit, as this is traditionally a quiet time for the tourism industry.
“WYD08 is an economic boost not just for Sydney, but for Australia. Thousands of visiting pilgrims will be travelling to Melbourne, Brisbane and other major centre across the country.”
