Federal Minister for Consumer Affairs Chris Bowen states that the proposed national body will supersede state powers on matters of consumer protection. Bowen says the new system will increase the safety and efficiency of product recalls.

The Western Australia Consumer Protection Commission says the national body will need to respond quickly to state-specific issues and be at least as effective as the current commission operating in the state.

WA’s Minister for Consumer Protection, Sheila McHale, is open to looking at the report, due to be released in May. "I've already indicated a willingness to support a uniform product safety if those two safeguards are in place."
