The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released figures showing that Tasmanian adults have the lowest literacy and numeracy skills in the country. Tasmania’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry has issued a call to all society to help the state raise the skill level of their population.
Damon Thomas, the Chamber’s CEO, emphasises the importance of having basic skills. "It's not just a problem for government, it's going to require some very careful message giving, some very careful skills education—not on education itself but the benefits of education," he say. “We have a great advantage here that we're not fighting a government that simply says there's no problem, go away."
