Workers prefer reduced hours to redundancy

Australia workers would rather stay with their current employer and work reduced hours than face redundancy, according to Robert Walters recent Employee Insights Survey.

The survey of 560 Australian professionals has found that 70 percent of respondents would prefer to have their work hours reduced than be subjected to other cost-cutting strategies such as redundancy, job sharing and a decrease in pay.

Taking redundancy was the next choice (16 percent), followed by unpaid leave/sabbaticals (5 percent), job sharing (4 percent) and a decrease in pay (3 percent).

Commenting on the results, James Nicholson, managing director, Robert Walters, Australia said: “In these times of uncertainty many companies need to cut costs… workers are therefore being faced with changing working conditions for the first time in their careers… and need to be open-minded to employers’ strategies and be as flexible as possible.”
