VMware launches new virtualisation platform for business

VMware, the global leader in virtualisation solutions for business, have announced the VMware vSphere 4, the industry’s first operating system for building the internal cloud, enabling the delivery of efficient, flexible and reliable IT as a service.

With particular focus on the small and medium business market, the new system will enable small businesses to achieve the full benefit of the efficiency, resilience and manageability demanded by large enterprises, at a price more fitting to small business budgets.

“VMware leads the way in providing IT solutions that make customers’ lives easier, and for SMB (small and medium business) … that means providing a means of administering a robust, continuously available IT infrastructure with minimal overhead and high investment return,” said Paul Maritz, president and chief executive officer of VMware.

“VMware vSphere 4 will provide these benefits to customers of all sizes, needs and budgets with proven technology that enables them to do more with less.”

As the complexity of IT environments has continued to increase over time, customers share of IT budgets are increasingly spent on trying to “keep the lights on.”

VMware vSphere 4 delivers “Always on IT” delivering comprehensive data protection features, ideal for small IT environments, including:

  • VMware Fault Tolerance and High Availability provides true continuous availability for infrastructure and applications to further enhance service continuity, enabling critical applications to run with zero downtime or data loss due to hardware failures.
  • VMware VMotion™ reduces planned downtime from server maintenance activities by enabling the live migration of running virtual machines from one server to another with no disruption or downtime.
  • VMware Data Recovery provides fully automated backup and recovery for all your applications and data, with complete integration with VMware’s management client for simple deployment and efficient operation.
  • VMware vShield Zones secures your applications and data inside a dynamic firewall that maintains complete protection across the physical and virtual environment with point-and-click ease.

Research has shown that small and medium businesses are increasingly turning to VMware as the preferred virtualisation leader.

““VMware vSphere is easy to install and simple to manage, which is important for smaller organisations with limited IT resources such as ours,” said Tariq Ali, chief technology officer, San Mateo County Employees’ Retirement Association.

According to Justin Lauer, IT manager for Campbell Clinic Orthopedics, VMware is a “reliable and secure platform to support growing infrastructure” and their business is reaping the rewards.

“The new VMware vSphere 4 solutions add more critical capabilities for SMBs that are fully integrated with VMware’s management console and are drop-dead easy to use.”
