Small business go without disaster recovery plan

By Veronica Joseph on Tuesday, 9 June 2009

A Telstra commissioned national survey has found that more than half of all Australian small businesses do not have a disaster recovery plan in the case of a major disruption.

Telstra business executive director, Brian Harcourt said it was worrying that 52 percent of businesses have not thought ahead and given more considerations towards a disaster recovery plan.

“The old adage about small business being the backbone of the economy really is true in Australia. They are the majority of businesses in Australia and contribute nearly half the nation’s GDP,” Harcourt said.

Harcourt noted that the absence of key staff could have a serious impact and stressed the importance of off-site working as an effective way to manage a business, maintain work flow and keep staff and management in contact.

“Thinking and planning ahead could mean the difference between business survival and failure,” added Harcourt.

Do you know what the main reason for businesses not having a disaster recovery plan? It is amazing to think – with our recent weather that small businesses could be just wiped out of business all together.
