By Jessica Stanic on Friday, 15 January 2010

The latest ABS jobs data released this week, highlight the resilience of the Australian economy, Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard said.

Figures reported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Thursday, showed the economy added 35,200 jobs in December, with the unemployment rate dropping to 5.5 percent.

Gillard told reporters in Melbourne on Thursday that the figures “provide further evidence of how Australia has outperformed virtually every other advanced economy during the global recession.”
