Grocery shoppers given more choice

By Jessica Stanic on Wednesday, 22 July 2009

Australian consumers will have more options about where to shop for groceries following a go-ahead by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for the sale of 45 Coles supermarkets to Foodworks.

Foodworks will now have around 750 member stores across Australia, providing more competition in the industry. The arrival of US warehouse giant Costco into the Australian market will also help to boost competition in the sector; along with the addition of 700 extra Aldi stores across the country over the next few years.

Minister for Competition Policy and Consumer Affairs Dr Chris Emerson, said the Government will continue to identify and remove barriers to competition in food and grocery retailing in Australia.
