Government scraps Grocery Choice website
The Government has scrapped its Grocery Choice website, set up to help shoppers compare grocery prices in supermarkets across the country in order to find the best price.
The decision to scrap the website has come amid heavy criticism of the site, with information only updated once a month and price comparisons broad and generic.
Consumer Affairs Minister Craig Emerson made the announcement on Friday, stating that the idea was simply “not feasible.”
“The fact is that in Australia, there are thousands of supermarkets and even more thousands of grocery items. The information requirements would have been enormous and they’re just not feasible, in my view.”
The Opposition used the closure as a chance to launch a scathing attack on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and his empty promises.
Opposition consumer affairs spokesman Luke Hartsuyker said: “I’m not surprised at all. The Coalition’s been calling on the site to be scrapped since day one. It really shows that now with the abandonment of Grocery Choice and Fuel Watch, Kevin Rudd was never really serious about putting downward pressure on the cost of living.”
