Bendigo Bank asks staff to take unpaid leave

The Bendigo Bank is urging its staff to take up to ten days unpaid leave in an attempt to avoid job cuts.

Over 5,000 staff from Bendigo Bank received an email asking them to consider the measure due to the bank’s ”zero credit growth”.

The bank has given workers until the end of the month to make a decision and has given no guarantees on future possible job cuts.

Bendigo Bank spokesman, Owen Davies blamed the weakening economy for the bank’s request.

The Finance Sector Union is encouraging staff to consider the move. However, Leon Carter, the union’s national secretary said there has been a lack of consultation with staff.

“Long-term solutions to the global financial crisis aren’t going to be achieved by some people taking leave and others not. If there has to be a long-term solution, let’s sit down with the bank, talk to them about it, and figure out a solution.”
