Redundancy done right

By Adeline Teoh on Friday, 3 July 2009

Making an employee redundant is never a happy prospect but you must also be able to prove that the process has been lawful. To make an employee redundant you must show you have done it for genuine operational reasons, which may include economic, technological and/or structural changes.

To prevent an unfair dismissal claim, employers must be able to demonstrate that circumstances have made the position untenable. This may include documentation such as declining income records if the reason is economic, or the acquisition of equipment if the reason is technological, for example.
