Am I the only person who thinks Gordon Ramsay’s funny?

By Jen Bishop on Tuesday, 9 June 2009

And I thought us Brits were overly politically correct. It seems you Aussies are a little sensitive when it comes to Gordon Ramsay. I for one am a big fan.

Just last week, a few of us on Twitter started places bets on how long it’d be before the media starting going bananas about Gordo’s excessive swearing. Hello? That’s what he does! He may be a good chef (yes, I know a few of his restaurants have closed recently!) but he’s probably known more for two other things: being a housewives’ favourite and swearing. A lot. And he knows it.

So it was no great surprise when he came over here and immediately started having a pop at local celebrities Tracy Grimshaw and Rove. And just look how much publicity he’s got! You know the saying: all publicity’s good publicity.

And no, what he said about Tracy wasn’t nice at all. And if he’d said that to me I would be upset too (but probably blushing because he even spoke to me in the first place and I think he’s hot), but it hardly warrants a national outrage on this scale, does it?

I thought Gordon Ramsey wanted to be known as a chef? If so, what\’s he doing? Seriously…a person, man or woman, who is famous for putting down other people has to take a long hard look at themselves…that sort of behaviour is evident of poor self-esteem. He is not funny, a very ugly man and anyone who finds bullying, whether its founded or not, should also take a look in the mirror and ask themselves why they find insulting other people hilarious.
The man is inept, incomplete and boring!

    I agre with Jye.
We know what GR is like so why the fuss.
Tracy is below average and Rove gets his fame from putting down other people.
Get over it. GR didn’t abuse all women only one below average READER (not reporter).
I feel sorrier for those in his kitchen, but then again they know what they are getting into.

I think Gordon Ramsey is a waste of space, and very surprised he still has a straight nose. It doesn\’t take any sort of talent to be rude and insult people, there must be hundreds of chiefs of equal or better talent that are suitable for tv. Him calling tracey what he did was not needed, if he wants to resort to personal insults, my god he\’s one ugly SOB, with a face that looks like its been set on fire and put out with a chain.

I don’t care for Gordon Ramsay either way but thought the whole exercise was an interesting experiment played out in the media.

Surely both Grimshaw and Rove knew what they were getting into – a little research wouldn’t go astray here – and if they really wanted to hit him where it hurts most they wouldn’t have aired the program(s) at all. No publicity = he doesn’t exist!

But both hosts and the networks that aired the respective programs wanted the ratings and they couldn’t have had the publicity without Ramsay and you can’t have Ramsay without swearing and insults. Get over it. It’s the way the world works.

I don’t think we’re sensitive about Gordon Ramsay – we’re sensitive about foul-mouthed bully boys who resort to cheap jokes about a woman’s appearance or sexuality for laughs. Yes, Ramsay is known for being profane and insulting, but does that make it acceptable? What with the catalogue of disasters he’s dealt with this year, it seems he’s now intent on stooping as low as possible to keep his name in the headlines. Delivering some home truths to crap restaurateurs is one thing; having a go at a fellow professional who was simply doing her job is quite another.

I’ve got as good a sense of humour as the next person but I do think we’re running the risk of accepting latent racism and homophobia in the name of ‘jokes’. Look at Clare Werbeloff, the ‘chk chk boom’ girl. Last time I checked, ‘wog’ was a derogatory term in any context – yet she thinks it’s OK to use it because ‘I was only kidding’.

Giddy up Gordon….keep the tirade coming. Mind you, Tracey Grimshaw has never got so much publicity – she should be thankful!

I think that Ramsey has created a PR problem for himself. Swearing in the context of his show is fine, but calling someone a ‘fat old pig’ and a dyke in front of an audience present for a cooking demonstration was a brain explosion! I think it will turn a lot of women off him, no matter how unpopular Tracey Grimshaw might be with some viewers. Personally I think Gordon is a sociopath and certainly demonstrates all of the character traits. It will be interesting to see how this one pans out.

  • Jye Smith

Yeah, I think Tracey’s reaction was about as valuable as the rest of the ACA program – just a trash magazine with motion. Gross.

I am also a big fan of Gordon Ramsay! I must admit I was a little taken back by his comments, but then again, everyone knows what he is about, did they really expect him to come out here and be sweet? He makes his living from ripping into people, so I don’t see why this visit would be any different! And you are right Jen, it has created a lot of publicity for his trip and also for the Good Food and Wine Festival. Perhaps that was the idea all along :)

  • Danielle

Tracy Grimshaw is a moron. To say “bullies thrive on victims who don’t fight back”…whatever! As if Ramsay’s not gonna fight this one back and make it even worse.
I think he’s hilarious Jen – with you all the way.
